Group Therapy

The following groups are offered periodically. For more information on specific dates and times, or to make a referral, please contact Luci at 608-819-8800 and leave your name, number and address so we may send you more information. If the child is not a current client, it will be necessary to set up an appointment before the group starts to evaluate whether the group would be helpful and appropriate for him or her. Before the group starts, please contact Luci regarding any necessary forms for the groups in which your child is interested. Snacks & refreshments are served during group meetings.

Teenage Girls Coping Skills Group - 14-19 Year Old Girls
This group would be helpful for girls experiencing problems with anxiety or depression and will focus on how to cope, process, and make good choices. Topics may include how to cope with conflict both at home and with peers, how to cope with peer pressure, how to make decisions regarding the use of alcohol and other drugs, how to decrease stress/anxiety and increase relaxation, and learning assertiveness skills and techniques to use when feeling depressed or anxious. Decision-making skills will be explored. Other skills will be taught as appropriate depending upon group membership. Before the group starts, please review and fill out the "Coping Skills For Teenage Girls Group" form (either Parent or Referral) which can be found in the "Appontments & Scheduling" section of this site.


Girls' Anxiety Reduction & Social Skills Group - 8-11 Year Old Girls
The focus of the group will be to teach Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to the girls to help them restructure their negative thinking. They will learn how to do relaxation techniques, take time away when they are feeling a strong emotion, and learn self-calming behaviors. They will be taught how to become aware of the mind/body connection, and how changing one will influence and change the other. They will also learn how to interact socially in more positive ways, and will practice role-plays and exercises that are appropriate to their age level.


Social Skills Group - 8-10 Year Old Children
This group would be helpful for children who are having a difficult time making and keeping friends. Some of the topics will include learning how to cope with anxiety around other children, learning appropriate social interactions, developing anger management skills, and learning how to identify feelings and cope with situations which may happen in school, at home with siblings, and in group situations. Role-playing will be explored and working as a team encouraged.


Transition and Decision Making Group - Individuals Transitioning Into High School
This group would be helpful for individuals who have problems with transitions and may be experiencing difficulty with organizational skills or being responsible for themselves, problems coping with peer pressure, and anxiety about starting high school. Focus will be on learning skills which would be helpful to guide them through successful academic and social situations.


Increasing Self Esteem Group - 14-17 Year Old Girls
The focus of this group will be on finding alternative, concrete ways to solve problems and learn new coping and decision-making skills. Self awareness of feelings and expanding choices in situations will be explored. The girls will learn how to identify their feelings and assertively increase their communication skills. The power of positive thinking will be emphasized.
